White iPhone 4 Unboxing… (Maybe)

As far as most of us know.... the white iPhone 4 has yet to be released. This guy was either fortunate enough to get his hands on one or clever enough to create a very convincing fake.

iOS 4 Adds Direct Access to iTunes Library

Although there's been no shortage of iPhone DJ apps in the past few years, they've remained fairly niche, since Apple didn't allow devs official access to the iPod music library -- mobile DJs needed to upload a second separate music library per app, and that's no fun at all. Looks like that's about to change, though: one of the 1500 new APIs in iOS 4 provides direct access to the iPod library, meaning music apps of all kinds can play your tracks in any wacky way they want -- including, yes, scratching them. The first app to support the new API in the store is Flare Scratch, which is a relatively simple scratch app -- we just gave it a shot and yes, it does indeed load tracks from the iPod library and let you scratch 'em. There's a bit of a wait when loading up a new track, though, so it's not totally fluid to use in anything but a hey-this-is-fun context, but we're betting we'll see more serious DJ apps hit with smoother transitions soon enough -- and we can't wait to see what devs do once iOS 4 hits the iPad and they've got more room to work with.

Can it be? Yes! More music toys! Downloading Flare Scratch now and I'll let you know how it turns out. =)

No Free Bumpers!

More disappointment from Apple...

BGR appears to have nabbed a document being distributed by Apple corporate to AppleCare reps tasked with handling iPhone 4 customers miffed with the antenna performance fiasco -- and for the time being, the recommendations are focusing on managing expectations, not fixing the problem. In a nutshell, reps are being instructed to pass on a more politically correct version of Steve's email by telling customers that they should "avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band." Interestingly, they agree that bumpers might fix the problem, but they're emphatic in saying that they "ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON'T promise a free bumper to customers." And yes, that statement is complete with caps and bold in the source document, so they mean business, it would seem. If it's any consolation, Apple says that "the iPhone 4's wireless performance is the best [they] have ever shipped," but let's be honest: for those zapping their calls into the afterlife every time they brush their phone the wrong way, it's not much consolation at all.

iPhone 4 Jailbroken!

Woot... can't wait to get this out so I can update my 3GS. =)

Planetbeing has successfully jailbroken the iPhone 4 using comex's userland jailbreak code!

Think I'm the first one I know about to get a root shell (and SSH) on iPhone 4, using poor @comex's code (since he has no iPhone 4).

Below you can see a high resolution screenshot of Cydia that MuscleNerd posted in a congratulations tweet to both hackers.

Congrats to @comex for another userland JB http://is.gd/d5N6I hi-res Cydia via @planetbeing & @chpwn iPhone4s

Update:
Unfortunately, p0sixninja says that this jailbreak cannot be released publicly as it contains some of Apple's software.

the jailbreak shown is a more of a stepping stone for us, it can't be released because it includes some of apples software

Planetbeing has confirmed this saying: Don't want to speak for @comex, but afaik no one has breathed a word about release date and what we have right now is nowhere ready.

Has Apple Done it Again?

iPhone 4

I'm sure most of you have heard... Apple's iPhone 4 has officially been announced. Security was pretty tight so coverage of this year's WWDC was very limited. Not as many video's as last year. I'll link what I can and hopefully the information that is available will help you in deciding whether or not this unit is for you.

Higher Resolution iPhone? Yes Please!

The front frame adds a hole for a camera. The LCD connector is a different position suggesting a substantial redesign. The connector is larger providing an increase in the number of connections to the motherboard which indicates a higher resolution display.

The glass looks identical to the 3G will only change the disposition of the connector, this suggests that there will be substantial revolution in appearance or in touchscreen technology. While the LCD is radically different compared to 3G. The connector is bigger and this suggests an increase in the number of connections to the motherboard (short PIN) as a result there will be a clearer definition superior to its predecessors.

WWDC 2010 is Sold Out

The question wasn't "Will it sell out?" More like when? 5 days of apple software development. Waiting to see if we'll hear anything about the new iPhone. Can't wait.

Apple is indicating that tickets for WWDC 2010 are sold out just eight days after being announced.

The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) takes place June 7 through June 11 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. The five-day conference includes the first ever iPad development sessions and hands-on working labs for iPhone OS 4, as well as Mac OS X core technology labs.

Apple is widely expected to announce the new fourth generation iPhone at the event.

Gizmodo Acquires and Disassembles iPhone 4G Prototype

Video is from DRBUK's channel on YouTube.

Gizmodo has acquired the much discussed iPhone 4G prototype and after disassembling and videoing the device they've declared it the real thing!

Their observations are as follows...

What's new:
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x460 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed:
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

Gizmodo also states the reasons they believe this is the real deal...
● It has been reported lost
● The screen
● The operating system
● It is recognized as an iPhone
● It uses micro-sim
● The camouflage case
● The fact that it's in the wild right now
● The guts, the definitive proof

With everything that's going I too believe that this may be the real thing. It'll be interesting to see how the next few days unfold.

Endgadget Video on iPhone OS 4.0

Well the last week has been very busy for me and even busier for Apple. I'm sorry I haven't had much time to cover everything. Unless you've been living under a rock... in the Marianas Trench... I'm sure you've heard about the release of the iPad. I need to do a little more reading on that, but I'll get something out soon. =)

Also iPhone OS 4.0 has been showcased and everyone seems to be happy about all the new features. Check it out...

Apple Launching Two New iPhones

That's right... it's happening. I'm not really a fan of CDMA but hey... that's excellent news for those on Verizon.

A new report from The Wall Street Journal suggests that Apple will reveal not one, but two new iPhones this year.

One would be based on GSM/UMTS standard that powers AT&T’s network, while another would be compatible with CDMA, the standard used by Verizon. The announcement would come in June or July, when Apple normally announces new iPhone models.

According to the WSJ, two different manufacturers will make the two different iPhones. Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. will develop the GSM model, as it has done for the previous three versions, while Pegatron Technology Corp. (a subsidiary of ASUSTeK) will build the CDMA version. Production of the CDMA version is scheduled to start in September.

If the report is true, it can only mean one thing: AT&T’s exclusivity deal with Apple is coming to an end. As long as Apple doesn’t build a CDMA version of the iPhone, AT&T doesn’t have to worry about Verizon becoming a carrier of the wildly popular smartphone. A CDMA-version of the iPhone almost certainly means that Verizon would add Apple’s phone to its arsenal.

As an AT&T spokesman told WSJ, “There has been lots of incorrect speculation on CDMA iPhones for a long time.”

And in fact, he’s right: We’ve heard tons of rumors about 4G Verizon iPhones and incorrect predictions of when Apple would drop AT&T-iPhone exclusivity, and the result is that the iPhone is still only on the AT&T network in the U.S.

Will that change this year? Is Apple really making two phones? Unless there’s a major leak from Cupertino, we’re going to have to wait to find out.
