IT&E Guam: Kababayan Sim

Seems like all of the Guam wireless carriers are trying to take a bigger bite out of the prepaid cellular market by targeting certain ethnic groups. Promises of lower rates to the motherland...
First I want to start off with the Kababayan Sim from IT&E. $20 and I get a SIM with $10 load. Should work as long as my handset is unlocked. Seems simple enough.
17.5 US cents a minute for calls to a Globe or TM number in the Philippines and 50 centavos per text from a Globe prepaid SIM to your IT&E number. Sounds cool right? (From personal experience... most people who use Globe do so because of the great subsidized prices they get on their phones... and have to endure a postpaid contract. Most prepaid users choose SMART because they're cheaper and seem to have better service in the greater Manila area.) Fail on that one IT&E.
I figured it would be a direct dial call to the Philippines. I dialed country code+city code+landline number. Call cannot be completed. Okay... country code+mobile number. Nothing. I try several other variations. Nothing. I check the sleeve that the SIM came in. No instructions. Odd. I call customer service and the CSR didn't seem to understand what i was asking for. She kept repeating the instructions for their long distance cards. After 20 minutes I gave up.
I then checked the IT&E website for a dialing sequence or access code. Nothing. I looked through the whole site including FAQ's. Nothing. I e-mailed their 24 hour customer service. 18 hours later I'm still waiting for a reply. Sorry IT&E... you're buckets of FAIL and I'm taking my $20.00 elsewhere. Tee Hee!
I wonder if GTA is still trading SIMs.
Battle of Guam GSM Carriers Shot Down
We've decided not to run the story due to a similar story being run. Sorry... some people just can't come up with their own stuff.

Battle of Guam’s GSM Carriers?
There have been a few comparison videos put up by a couple of the local carriers. Personally... none of these tests really show me anything. So after some serious "think, think, ponder, ponder" I've decided to test GSM pre-paid voice services on each of the carriers. Each of the SIMs and phones in the test will be purchased out of pocket. So we'll see how this test goes and then move on to data tests later on...

GTA TeleGuam Official iPhone Carrier
Yup... you read it right. GTA TeleGuam is an official iPhone carrier. Prices? They say it's comparable to what AT&T currently offers. It's great that Guam is finally getting something that it's been asking for. At the same time... remember that it is a telecomm company and at the end of the day... they're there to make money. Voice plan and a separate data plan is required. AT&T requires this as long as the iPhone is on their network. A sim without data enabled will not work. Kinda sad huh? I wonder if GTA will implement the same thing.
Release is scheduled for Dec. 11, 2009. Pre-order by calling 671-644-4GTA or by visiting gta.net.
Recovery Effort: Philippines after Typhoon Ondoy
Almost 2 weeks after Typhoon Ondoy and flooding has barely subsided. And with more rain on the way things are only looking worse. Only a hand-full of companies on Guam have decided to do anything to assist in the recovery. I've contacted the local Red Cross and was told that I should contact National Office Supply. I then called National Office Supply and they are willing to take canned goods, clean blankets and jackets. For right now I am unaware of anyone that is taking clothing or monetary donations.
So now I'm looking for people willing to help. I need people willing to help me pick up and sort out donations. I also need someone willing to help with and keep track of monetary donations. I'm also looking for anyone familiar with shipping a large amount of cargo to the Philippines.
I'm gonna try to set up some drop boxes as well as some pick up points. I am willing to pick up any donations as long as the clothing is clean and in good condition.
Please! Lets do what we can... some of these families lost homes, friends and relatives.
If you're interested in helping... please contact me at thepoksquidproject@gmail.com.

How are you getting your iPhone?
Living on Guam makes obtaining an iPhone at reasonable cost a difficult task. As most may know the iPhone is exclusive to AT&T in the US. Being a territory of the US and not having a local AT&T vendor means that we'll have to be a little more inventive. So what can we do? Either purchase the unit on EBAY, purchase a 2nd hand unit from a friend or purchase from one of the local unauthorized vendors. The average going price for an 8GB is $799 while the 16GB has gone upward of $1100.00.
There is another alternative. If you're making a trip to the states you can always purchase the unit at the subsidized price, pay for a months service and pay the early termination fee. How much is the termination fee? Here's what you need to know.
The iPhone 3G S will be subsidized by AT&T for qualified customers. This means $199 for the 16 GB model and $299 for the 32 GB model. Unfortunately, unsubsidized, the iPhone 3G S is priced at an $599 and $699 plus the $18 setup fee.
For a new individual iPhone plan you are required to have the iPhone data plan and that's $30.00. The lowest individual voice plan is the 450 nationwide minutes for $39.99 a month. Even though I text up to 100 messages daily, I wont add in text messaging just to keep the monthly price as low as I can.
AT&T permits its customers to terminate their contracts early for a fee of $175. This fee is pro-rated: Under your AT&T contract the termination fee is reduced by $5 per month of the contract completed. For example, if you buy your iPhone and canceled your plan in ten months your termination would be approximately $120 ($175-$50 = $125) since you have completed approximately ten months of your contract.
So if you purchased the iPhone and canceled after a month with service at the bare minimum you would have paid $438.99 not including any security deposit that you may have to pay.
439 vs 599. Hmm... it may be worth the work if you're saving $160.
